When Minotauro Nogueira submitted Tim Sylvia at UFC 81, it was because he was one step ahead of The Giant. Noguiera was attacking an arm from top side and he said he knew that Sylvia would escape to the 4 point position, thus sticking his neck out, giving the old bull access to the neck which he seized in the blink of an eye.
In the post fight interview, Nogueira told Joe Rogan that this is why he liked to train attacks in combinations:
“…If you don’t get the first one, you get the second one…”
If you’ve trained much at all, you know that it’s quite difficult to land something if the other person knows what you’re going for, its easier if you catch them off-guard, between positions, or you can mask one attack with the other.
Attacking in combinations has always worked from the guard and is almost a necessity for judo players. One takedown gives you the balance for the other, as we see in combinations like Ko-uchi gari leading into Seoi nage/drop seoi nage.
Or in the single leg defense switching to the double leg takedown or alternating to the outside single.
At the 2012 worlds, Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida fought Rodolpho Viera in the open weight Absolutes. This is listed on Youtube as “Greatest BJJ match ever!” (see it here)
After five whole minutes of Buchecha trying to pass the guard, Rodolpho threatened a midair Clarke-Gracie style omoplata which cost Buchecha his base and gave Rodolpho the sweep.
At the highest level we can see smaller guys getting big guys to give up their base by attacking a limb and setting up a dead angle.
It’s a strategy that works and it’s a strategy you should start to think about, start to be about and start to DRILL about.
Here’s a video that illustrates the concept in it’s entirety, and features my Hero, Coach and Friend, BJJ Black Belt Rob Williams (under Bruno Panno).
Here’s a couple more examples of an attack setting up a sweep.
Train Hard, train smart. Take care of your training partners…
And trick them by attacking for the angle!
